How Do I Get Started as a Webmaster or Blogger?
I get lots of questions from friends and clients who want to know the basics: How do I get started? they ask over and over again. It is the most asked question I receive so I'm going to post a few tips on how to get started in the "webbing" business. You may want to start an ecommerce site, a blog, an inspirational site — the ideas are numerous — but if you don't have a plan to follow you soon become overwhelmed and give up.
So — let's get started. I'll try to post several times a week so you'll have a good plan to follow in a short time.
Setting Goals
Firstly you must set your goals and then focus on those.
When you are setting your goals, be specific. Setting a goal such as 'start a blog,' 'build a website', 'make money' or 'quit my job' are not specific, but general. On the other hand, a goal such as 'start my own blog about dancing' or 'setup an ecommerce site to sell my cartoons,' or 'hire someone to design a website and get it set up' are specific goal orientated tasks. When you are specific it becomes a lot easier for you to find exactly what you need to accomplish your goals.
So for today, get focused and decide what it is you want to do. Write it down. Be specific.
I find that asking myself questions helps me to define my goals.
Let's look at an example of how questions will work to help you define your specific goals. Let's say I want to start a blog but I don't really know what to do. I might ask myself the questions and answer them like this:
1. What is my ultimate purpose for wanting to start a blog?
"I want to help people with their personal development by sharing my ideas and personal experiences.
2. What subjects do I want to cover in my blog?
"Self improvement, personal development, life coaching, purpose in life"
3. Who will benefit from reading my blog?
"Anyone looking to grow in personal development"
4. What skills do I have?
"I can write, I have degree in Psychology, etc."
5. What areas of weakness do I have?
"I don't know anything about blogging; I don't have a website."
Do you see my specific goals unfolding? I want to start a blog about personal development. I need to learn about blogging. I need a blogging platform (website). Now, I can focus on these three things: Get a website. Learn all I can about blogging. Start a blog about personal development.
Once you've set your goals you are on your way to building up your online business. So, for today ….. set your goals and focus on your goal.
