How Do I Get Traffic To My Web sites?

by: Linda Van Fleet

Probably the most asked question by webmasters is “how do I get traffic to my web site?” It’s a good question. Fact is, without traffic to your site you can’t sell anything. You might as well not have a site if you don’t have traffic. The problem is most people go about this the wrong way. Knowing they need traffic they immediately start thinking of buying it. After all, the many of the Internet Marketing consultant’s encourage buying some sort of service or some sort of ppc ad that will solve all of your traffic problems. At first glance this seems like the best route to take. But, is it?

No, getting traffic is not your first priority. Rather, firstly you must build your resources and get them in place for the traffic that will ultimately follow if you systematically build a customer-friendly site. There are actually 3 things you need to concentrate on that are equally as important as getting traffic to your site. These are:

1). Developing long term customers,
2). Creating your list,
3). Recruiting affiliate and joint venture partners.

Don’t think “getting traffic.” Think “getting customers;” or, “getting affiliates.” As you concentrate on the people your traffic will start to increase and soon you will have the 20,000+ visitors you need to keep your site profitable.

Let’s say, for the moment, that you did launch a ppc campaign on Google, MSN or Yahoo and soon your site was being inundated with visitors. Great! you say. Sure, great - if you have the resources in place to turn your visitors into customers. Do you have an opt-in newsletter in place? Do you have a product that others will want to represent and earn commissions on? Is your site worth telling a friend about? Then, by all means, start your ppc campaign.

BUT — what if you don’t have your resource collection tools in place? What if you don’t have a way to capture your site visitor’s information so you can start developing a relationship? What if you don’t have an affiliate program in place? Then, my friend, all you are doing is spinning your wheels. I know this from first-hand experience as I’ve done it too many times.

So how do you get more traffic to your site?

By asking this question instead: How will I get better results from the traffic I am getting to my site? The bottom line is Forget traffic. Think customers. Forget numbers. Think quality. Grow your resources and you will grow your Internet business without worrying about how many hits your web sites are getting.

Recommended Resource: I bought a great SEO book the other day and I loved it so much I decided to promote it. You can check it out here: SEObook– I believe it’s the best book I’ve read on the subject — great for the beginner and for the advanced webmaster.

Good article.

Another was to increase traffic is by doing exactly what you are doing here … providing good information for your readers. I was using the Google Blog Search and this article caught my eye. If you provide good information on your website people will be attracted to it.

BTW .. your recommendation of the SEOBook is right on the money. It contains just about everything a beginning or expert webmaster would want to know about SEO. From using Adwords (http://adwords.google.com) to participating in large-scale advertising networks (http://www.worldwidereviews.com/library/IncreaseWebsiteTraffic.htm) that book covers it all.

Nice job.
